Our History

“As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them that are of the household of faith.” Galatians 6:10

Building Christian Ministries was founded in 2005 after a mission trip to the city of Aracaju, Brazil. Phillip and Kathy Abernathy, Eddie and Jeanette Garrett and Tommy Abernathy were deeply touched by what they saw on this trip to Brazil and were sure that the Lord had more work for them there. On their first mission trip to Aracaju, Brazil this group worked closely with the First Baptist Church of Aracaju to build a new facility for their existing girls’ shelter.

Although the construction work was finished with the new girl’s shelter, the Lord continued to speak to these people about supporting those sweet girls they had met while in Aracaju. With continued prayer and support from their families and church members, this small group of believers traveled back to Brazil to see how the shelter was fairing. Upon arrival in Aracaju they discovered some great needs in the girls’ home and realized that the Lord had led them back there for a specific purpose. They realized that God’s hand was at work in this home and that the children of this land need love and support. It was at that time that this small group of only five people understood that they could make a difference in the lives of many of God’s children in Brazil. Building Christian Ministries became the organization that would provide the love and assistance these children long for.

The mission for BCM is “To show Christ’s love through meeting the needs of children throughout the world.” God is still leading BCM to continue work in Brazil by building homes for boys and girls, partnering with other independent missionaries and spreading the Gospel.  BCM has been blessed to have fellow Brazilian believers who are on staff to oversee the day-to-day operations of the facilities and send regular progress reports. The loving staff members have been handpicked, and they are people  who demonstrate Christ’s love on a day-to-day and minute-by-minute basis in order to make lasting impressions on the children.
